CRAFT STUDY TRIP TO SAN DIEGO
February 12 - 17, 2020
$1,250 Caucus Members Only 
 

The James Renwick Alliance craft study tour to San Diego will be filled with visits to fabulous private collections, state-of-the-art studios, modern museums with stellar collections, great food and good friends. This unique five day program is organized with the assistance of the JRA 2014 Distinguished Craft Educator and 2010 JRA Distinguished Artist Series (DAS) presenter Wendy Maruyama; upcoming DAS artist furniture maker, Annie Evelyn; assistant professor of jewelry and metalsmithing at San Diego State University, Kerianne Quick; and 2015 JRA DAS presenters, brothers, and glass artists, Einar and Jamex de la Torres.

A deposit of 50% of the total is required for registration and the remaining balance of $625 will be due on December 15.

Wednesday, February 12
Travel Day

 Welcome Dinner

Thursday, February 13
Morning: Studio visit to Arlene Fisch (the first JRA Master of the Medium in Metal) and gallery visit to Taboo Gallery.
Afternoon: Lunch at Red Door Restaurant.  Private museum tours, including Visions Art Museum and the San Diego Craft Collective.
Evening: Dinner on your own.

Friday, February 14
Morning:
Visit to the Salk Institute to learn about Wendy Maruyama's collaboration with Salk scientist John Reynolds for an upcoming exhibition entitled Trifecta After, enjoy a private tour of the Salk Institute with the Director of Public Programs, Monika Wert-Parkinson.
Afternoon: Lynch at Herringbone Restaurant.  Visit to RB Stevenson Gallery to tour a new ceramics collection by Jeff Irwin and Joanne Hayakawa.  
Evening: Reception and exhibition by faculty members, students, and former students at San Diego State University.  Dinner on your own.

Saturday, February 15
Morning: Studio tours at Bread and Salt, including the de la Torres Brothers (includes demo), Anthenaeum Art Center, Jason Lane, Adam Manley, and Wendy Maruyama.  
Afternoon: Lunch at Ciccia Osteria.  Enjoy a walk through Chicano Park, a 7.9 acre park home to the country's largest collection of outdoor murals, as well as various sculptures and earthworks.  Tour Josh Herman's ceramics studio.
Evening: Dinner at El Agave Restaurant in Old Town San Diego.

Sunday, February 16
Morning: Studio tours, including Helen Shirk and Sasha Koozel Reibstein.
Afternoon: Lunch at Extraordinary Desserts and discussion on collaboration between Karen Krasne, restaurateur, and Jennifer Luce, designer.  Afternoon studio and gallery tours, including James Watts, Mark Quint Gallery, and Jennifer Luce.
Evening:  Dinner on your own.

Monday, February 17
Morning: Tour of University of California, San Diego Stuart Collection.  The mission of this collection is to enrich the cultural, intellectual, and scholarly life of the UCSD campus and surrounding community by building and maintaining a unique collection of site-specific works by leading artists of our time.
Afternoon: Catered lunch at the home of Karen Fox, a serious collector of joyful art and crafts.  Tour of the Ron and Lucille Neely collection, led by Mark Quint. Then enjoy a home and studio tour with Jean Lowe and Kim McConnell.
Evening: Farewell dinner at Mille Fleurs.
